I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I somehow managed to make it through the day in one piece and only minimal tears. LOL Every year it's getting harder and harder for me to do the Thanksgiving thing. Since I didn't post on turkey day, I shall list the things I am grateful for now. I am thankful to be alive, to feel....yes even pain, for my wonderful children, my hubby, to be able to wake up each day and be able to see and hear the sights and sounds of the world around me, for my fur babies that help make me feel better, to have food to eat when there are people who have nothing at all and for a place to call home wishing those who don't have a home will soon find one.
I am hoping to get my house cleaned and the xmas tree up tomorrow. Long gone are the days when I go into my winter cleaning frenzy, make Thanksgiving dinner and get the tree up all in the same day. I'm lucky to get "basic" cleaning done in one day! *chuckles* I might as well take advantage of Serena being home to help me get things done. She's more than old enough to do the more physical things I can no longer do.
Just an FYI for everyone...turkey WILL make you sleep, but only under a certain condition. A bit of trivia for you....it's not the turkey you eat that makes you so sleepy after eating a big Thanksgiving dinner, it's all the other food! *smiles* Yup, it's called carb overload!! Now, for the turkey thing....I found out quite by accident that turkey is a good "sleeping pill". Last year I got a bit hungry later that night so thought I'd warm myself up a bit of turkey. I played on the computer while eating and relaxing. About an hour later I felt REALLY tired! The, omg-I need toothpicks-can't keep my eyes open one second longer kind of tired. I went to bed and zonked out. I believe it was one of the best night's sleep I'd had in quite some time. It wasn't until the next day I thought about what had happened the night before. The next night I decided to experiment a little. I waited till about 1:30 or 2 am, heated some turkey, just turkey and ate it. Again, I was falling asleep on my keyboard tired within an hour. The next night I did it a bit different. This time I ate some turkey and a bit of stuffing. Waited and waited and waited some more to feel fall over tired and it didn't happen! Well darn it.....now I had to take 2 more of my otc sleeping pills and wait a couple of hours for them to kick in. It was a very late night for me.
Conclusion is: If you eat some turkey, by itself at night when you're belly is "empty" and you're not full from something else, the tryptophan in the turkey acts as a sleeping pill in your body and puts you to sleep! *big grin* How neat is that?! It's very nice and saves a few bucks not having to take yet more pills needlessly.
